Birthday
The Runaway Cake
It’s the big birthday, and the party starts at five. But when it’s time for the candles, the cake sprouts wafer-cookie legs and runs off through the cat flap. A chase through the neighbor’s yard, past the duck pond and up the slide, and a secret: who ate the strawberry from the cake’s crown?

Here’s how it looked with Sofía and Max

That Saturday, Sofía was turning six, and waiting in the kitchen was the most beautiful cake in the world: chocolate, with whipped cream on top and a crown of strawberries.
The party was at five.
That morning, when nobody was looking, Sofía ate one strawberry from the crown. Just one. Nobody noticed.
Well. Almost nobody.
At four thirty, Sofía and Max went into the kitchen to put on the candles. And the cake sprouted two little wafer-cookie legs. And two little licorice arms. And a face.
The cake looked at Sofía and Max and turned as red as a strawberry.
“No way!” it squeaked.
And it jumped off the table, ran across the kitchen—PLIP, PLIP, PLIP!—and escaped into the yard through the cat flap.
